H is for Hug

H is for Hug

Everybody loves a good hug.

Even the ones who claim they don’t like being hugged, actually have a small corner of themselves melt when a child hugs them with joy and abandon.

A hug does so many things both to the hugger and the ‘huggee’ (that sounds like a diaper, so I am going to say ‘recipient’ from hereon!).

Why do I love hugs? Let me count the ways:

  • They are the first thing you do when you see a loved one after a long time.
  • They make everything all right, even if it is just for the space of a few seconds.ย
  • They work the best in a situation where you have nothing to say.
  • They soothe those hurtful memories.
  • They warm you up, both from within and otherwise.
  • They are the closest you’ll ever feel to absolute love- pure, unadulterated and spontaneous.
Hugs are free, easy to share and make life lovable.ย
Children give the best hugs: tight, sincere, filled with the expectation that they will be hugged back. And you really can’t just stand there like a statue while an animated toddler encircles your neck with his arms, can you? I dare you to do that. Your arms have a mind of their own in that situation!
A hug also conveys something else. It is an expression of trust. You feel safe, secure and protected in the arms of the one you trust, whether that person is a parent, a lover, a spouse or a very dear friend. That trust that you repose in another being also speaks volumes about you; that you are willing to open up and be loved. Without that trust, the chain of relationships would be very tiny indeed.
Hug someone right now. Feel the difference that it makes, for you and for the other. Feeling better yet?

  1. Loved it and loved the warm feeling. A few days ago, I saw my son for the first time in 1 1/2 years. I stood up to hug him and he said he didn't want any hugs. My heart broke — I would give a lot just to wrap my arms around him one more time. Hugs heal. Thank you for sharing.

  2. I used to be intimated by people hugging me, but I soon got over it once I realized how wonderful it felt. I think it was because my family was always very conservative and reserved.

  3. Hugs are amazing and there is a scientific reason as well why we enjoy them — releases oxytocin. ๐Ÿ™‚ I never used to be a hugger until about 18 years…now I love my hugs! ๐Ÿ˜€
