Judge Not Another

Judge Not Another

Acutely awake
I lie on my quilt
Contemplating

Should I have said something?
She was a stranger
It shouldn’t matter

But why did I feel the hurt
The wrenching, searing pain
That comes from self-pity

The image of her scorn rises before me
The look she gave
Spoke a thousand words

She looked down upon me

On my creased forehead
On my unshaped eyebrows
On my untrimmed locks
On my unironed shirt

Quite quietly, she sized me up
Saying a lot without saying a word

Turning I glanced at my newborn
Sucking his thumb

And I smiled;
Appearances are deceptive

  1. Hey, that was a nice twist.. and then I had to read it again- because it had this tender soft loving voice … beautifully written Shailaja
