My husband is a practical romantic.

Now, you may wonder, is there such a thing? But, of course. He is the guy who will not remember birthdays and anniversaries. He is the chap who will have reminders on his Google calendar for events and occasions and still turn to me and ask if an important day is around the corner.

He is the man who will not gift me anything on my birthday or anniversary. But, you know what he does? He gives me more.

Soon after we were engaged, he picked up this elegant, fine and bewitching bracelet for me. The thought, the love and the prettiness of that piece left me breathless with excitement. I received it a full two months before my wedding. I wore it with pride and love, bursting from my heart. I was thrilled that I had such an attentive, loving chap in my life.

The following year, on my birthday, he gave me nothing. I was disappointed, to say the least. But, I told myself, this happens after marriage. Less than a week later, he gifted me two sarees. I was overjoyed and asked him, ‘But why are you giving me these now? My birthday was a week ago.’

He looked at me and said, ‘If I were to give you something on that day, when you obviously expect it, where is the fun in that? Don’t you know that I love you all through the year and not just on your birthday or anniversary?’

And, just like that,in that moment, my world changed. My perception grew and my heart overflowed. I understood what the art of giving really meant.

It means that his love for me is not bound by time and material things. It is Love itself.
