Book overview:

This classic Dr. Seuss Beginner Book features silly tongue twisters that will have readers of all ages giggling with glee. When a fox in socks meets Knox in a box, you know that hilarity will ensue. Add chicks with bricks (and blocks and clocks) and you’re sure to get your words twisted and lips locked. With his unmistakable gift for rhyme, Dr. Seuss creates a hysterical and energetic way for beginning readers to dive into the joy of reading.

My review:

My husband picked up this book along with four other Dr.Seuss classics back in 2008. My daughter began by looking at the pictures and enjoying the colours, since she was only about 2 years old at the time.
This is a Read-aloud book, so parents are encouraged to sit with their kids and get them to relate to the concept of rhyming words.
It starts with a fox in socks who meets Knox in a box. If you think that’s difficult, wait till you get to clocks and blocks, followed by chicks and bricks. It gets even more twisted when you go further into the book.
As a child, you would have heard the phrase , ‘She sells seashells on the seashore’.
That is going to sound tame when you read aloud this bit from the book:
Duck takes licks
in lakes Luke Luck likes.
Luke Luck takes licks
in lakes duck likes.

And that’s not even the most difficult part of the book!

The first time I read the book, I made the mistake of reading too fast and ended up with a twisted  tongue and a bewildered kid! The next time, I remembered and slowed down. It was so much more fun and far more relaxing to just read slowly and feel the words roll gradually and beautifully off the tongue.
Kids will love the book because it tickles their funny bone. I’ll bet the parent gets a good chuckle out of it as well. As the kids get older, they will relate to the idea of rhyming words and reading the book by themselves.
Any book by Dr. Seuss is great for inculcating the love of reading. But, don’t start with this one for the child. It may be rather intimidating. A better beginner book would be Cat in the Hat or Green Eggs and Ham, also by the same author. The latter is a lovely book to help kids understand the importance of trying out a new food.

My rating for Fox in Socks: 4/ 5
The only reason I reduced a point is that the book can be rather overwhelming for a first-time read. But, it is great to pick up and read at leisure when you/ your kid is ready for it.

Have heard so much about Dr Seuss books recently, but sadly haven't read any as yet! I wonder, why I never read/heard about these books when I used to buy books for lil A. Will definitely check out his books for my niece and nephew!

My kids thrived on the Dr Seuss books. Green Eggs and Ham was one of my favourites.

The fact that your book reviews are based on your experience with the book as a parent (and not only as a thoughtful reader) should make them really helpful for the readers. Great job, Shailaja!
