Do you need a logo?
How important is branding as a blogger or a small business? If you’re asking yourself this question, all you need to answer this is to think about the first things that come to mind when you think of a brand, any brand.
For argument’s sake, let’s take the example of Google. And the number one thing that pops into your brain is the brand’s logo, right?
So the correct answer is this: If you’d like people to relate to you as a brand or business and have high recall value, then yes, you need a logo.
Should you hire a designer?
This one is a bit tricky, especially if you’re just starting out in the business. When you launch a business, you have to budget for a certain level of expenses. I’m going to use the example of a blogger to help you understand costs to budget for.
As a blogger who wants to have a professional brand here are things that you should budget for:
- A self-hosted website (which means hosting costs for the year)
- One or two paid plugins (I typically recommend a good social sharing plugin)
- Social media schedulers (I personally love Tailwind and Buffer!)
- Technical Support
- A Professional logo for your brand
As you can see, a logo is very important. This doesn’t mean you have to do it right off the bat, although to be honest, that helps.
So coming back to answer the question, ‘Do you need a professional designer?’ I would say this depends on your budget. For my part, I had a certain budget in mind for this blog, so I hired a designer to create my logo for shailajav.com.
But I just used DesignEvo earlier today to create a new logo.
Here’s how I designed my new logo
My other blog, The Moving Quill, is what I call my hobby blog. So I haven’t invested as much in that as I have for this one, my main blog.
If you click over and see that blog, you’d see this logo that I created below and do you know how long it took me?
10 minutes 🙂

That’s right! Just 10 minutes and I had a free logo that I can use for my blog. What do you think?
Okay, here are the steps to follow.
Log on to DesignEvo.com and click on ‘Make A Free Logo’

Pick a category that is in your niche. You have over 7000 designs to choose from, so you’re spoilt for choice.

Choose your Logo Name and slogan (if relevant)

Make your logo by picking an icon from the list on the left. Change colours, fonts and size using a simple drag and drop option.

And hey, you’re done! 10 Minutes and a Free logo. What’s not to love? 🙂
Is it REALLY free?
Yes, it is. The only thing you have to do if you download the free version is that you have to give credit to DesignEvo for the logo.
Would you rather download it and own the copyright for the logo? You can pick from either of their pricing plans.
If yes, I have a sweet deal JUST for you, all through Black Friday.
Here’s how it works.

I love your new logo, Shailaja. That quill looks super cool. I made a logo for my blog using Canva. It’s a simple design. Just uploaded it as favicon. I have to update my site with it. DesignEvo looks easy to follow. Will give it a try next time. I have a question – which format logos are usually saved as? I’m not sure if I asked the question correctly.
