Whispered gossip in the wind
Stung and wounded sharper than a knife’s edge

Amidst the grief and the tears
She heard the clarion of blame

Must be the parents’ fault, they said
All that pressure to please

She heard it all, cradling his head in her lap

Why, my boy? It was just an exam.

This was inspired by a recent article that I read about how a 19-year-old committed suicide because she didn’t get into a course of her choice. I was moved by the absolute tragedy and futility of such a step.
