She was too late
They said
There was nothing they could do
He said

I refuse to believe that
She said
But it’s the truth
They said

You have to let it go
He said
And watch my life crumble?
She said

What else can we do?
They said
I want justice
She said

But it’s past midnight
They said
Wake him up now!
She said

Fine, let’s go
He said
Let’s ring the doorbell
They said

Yes, can I help you?
Said a soft voice
We need to see the culprit
She said grimly

But…it’s really late. He’s asleep
Protested the voice
I don’t care!
She said

Then a head poked out
Shivering and scared
I am really sorry, I am
he whimpered

Steely eyes and a glare welcomed him
You shouldn’t have done it! She was my friend!
She uttered through clenched teeth

I will make it up to you, I promise
He whispered

Towering over him.
With anger thrashing about in her heart
She said
I was too late to save her.
And you will never find another cat quite like her. . .

A neat and perfect take on the prompt 🙂

Shailaja V · February 20, 2014 at 7:35 am

This was inspired by a friend of mine, who got really attached to a stray cat and was heartbroken to see it taken away by the authorities.

Shailaja V · February 20, 2014 at 7:36 am

Not a 'pet' person, per se. But this is where the prompt led me 😀

Shailaja V · February 20, 2014 at 7:36 am

Ah yes, the cat! I don't know why I chose the cat, really. Just the idea of a dead cat emerged when I saw this prompt 🙂 Thanks Kalpana 🙂

Psych Babbler · February 21, 2014 at 1:42 am

🙁 That's sad…I kept thinking of my two kitties and trust me, if someone ever tries to hurt them, they are going to be in a lot of physical pain! Nicely penned…

Shailaja V · February 21, 2014 at 3:44 am

Psych, I can imagine! How people can bring themselves to harm other creatures, wilfully, is beyond me!

dreamzandclouds · February 21, 2014 at 12:58 pm
