To be idle is an art
To do nothing
To sit still
To savour the moment
To lay claim to quietude
The adult looks on it as wastage
Of energy
Of resources
Of time
Of money
The child revels in it
In its freedom
In its uniqueness
In its existence
In its peace
In idle chatter there is love
In idle exchanges there is affection
In idle relaxation there is a nullification
Of the mind
Of logic
Of hurried reasoning
Give in to the Idler
She is beautiful
She is non-judgemental
She is important
She is a necessary part of this play on Earth

A big hug to the Mother of the girl with the “thalaila thundu” Beautifully written.
“What is this life if, full of care…we have no time to stand and stare?”
Blessings to you, Shailaja!
The exact same poem came to mind my too when I read your post Shailaja.. there is not time to stand and stare.. such pleasure in that.
Trust you to pick out the 'thalaila thundu' bit :D. Grateful for the blessings, Vidya!
That W.H. Davies poem is a classic and one of my favourites!

Lovely expression Shailaja n it's so true!!
Very happy that you think so, Aditi 🙂
Totally in support of Idle Time. Its a much needed talent one should possess to stay idle 😉 And beautifully put into words.
Thank you, Vidya! We need to make time to be idle. Can you believe it has come to this? 🙂
Yes, I have never understood the angst people have against those who sit and 'do nothing'. It is the greatest feeling in the world 🙂
I think as we grow older it is even more important to savor life's moments. I have found great peace in my time alone. I revel in it. It is when I am in the zone when I am my most creative. ♥
Well written. I relish time when I'm idle. Carver, ABCW-Team
Somebody said it so rightly, work is not always required. There is such a thing as sacred idleness. Oh yes, idleness is sacred and we must indulge in it from time to time! 🙂
Yes, sage advice!
ROG, ABCW
I treasure my alone time too, Kathy. Just wonder if I will have only that as the years pass…
Thank you, Carver 🙂
Very true, Shilpa. We get so caught up in the trials of life, that we forget to sit and idle. Thank you 🙂
Thanks Roger 🙂
They say- An idle mind is a devil's workshop!
They should read your poem! Nice & valid thoughts here, Shailaja 🙂
Woooaahhh! I loved this! So nice and different 🙂
cheers to being idle! if only life gives us time to cherish the idle moments and the mind is mute to let us do so 😛
God! I'm so idle these days …this is so for me 😀
Wonderful take on the word “idle.” I used to hate it, but now as I'm getting older, I see the IMPORTANCE of it.

More people should idle, Anita 🙂 Thanks for reading!
Happy to have pleased, Stri 🙂
It will, Nibha. In time, you will have a lot of time on your hands. Let go and let the idleness take over 🙂
Waiting to see you back on posting mode, Naba 🙂
Thank you,dear Leslie 🙂
Only in our truly idle moments we can appreciate the idyllic. Beautifully written poem, Shailja!
At times I'm such a blessed soul… 😉
That's a beautiful line, Beloo! Thanks for the compliment!
Why, at times? You are always blessed, my dear 🙂
Yes, it is absolutely necessary to take time for yourself and do nothing 🙂 Very therapeutic!
Wow this was absolutely beautiful. One of the hardest things for me to do is sit and meditate but when I take the time, it works wonders. I can't wait to see what you have in store for us for the A-Z Challenge. It's going to be so much fun!
Be well,
Elsie

So glad you stopped by, Elsie! I am really looking forward to the A-Z Challenge too! Already scheduling my posts 😀
Now that is truth. To be idle really is an art….to be completely bereft of concerns, even though they are there!
Wow, reminded me of a poem called leisure that is one of my favourites. Simple yet powerful in words
Very well penned, Shailaja.
The essence of leisure put together excellently. 🙂
Thank you, Poonam! Glad you could stop by 🙂
It is very difficult but very do-able too, if we can put our minds to it 🙂
Would love to read it. Can you post the link here?
I wonder how a kid can sit still, when I see my little P running around. But at times she sits silent and has a dreamy look in her eyes. I wonder if she's enjoying being idle, at that moment 🙂
A beautiful poem, and a lovely snap 🙂 ,so many valid points to think about !
So true! I love watching kids when they are idling away…and hate to disturb anyone in that state…I believe it is a high state of consciousness and brings out the best in one and it is absolutely essential to do it from time to time!
